Sam Mooney is a singer/songwriter from Brookhaven, Mississippi

Sam Mooney is a singer/songwriter from Brookhaven, Mississippi. Hailing from a place where music is so deeply connected to the culture, Mooney’s musical heritage is of blues, rock, soul, and country.  He blends this musical pedigree with modern influences of pop music to produce a fresh sound with broad appeal.  This sound was showcased when Mooney’s original song “The Love You Never Knew” won the Performing Songwriter Competition at Berklee College of Music while he attended their Five-Week Summer Program in 2013.

Sam is a twelve year veteran of the piano, and as he continued to grow musically, he added singing, songwriting, guitar, percussion, and playing bass to his skill set.

In Mooney’s first major talent competition, the 2013 Mid-South Fair Youth Talent Competition, he won the entire contest, which is hailed as the largest amateur youth talent contest in the world, by beating out a field of over 250 contestants chosen from across an eight state region. Mooney won the competition as a variety solo act, singing and playing his own arrangement of the Alex Claire hit, “Too Close”. As part of the prize package, Mooney won $2,000 and a trip to Hollywood to meet with people in the entertainment industry.

In the spring of 2014, Mooney recorded his debut EP, Somewhere in Between, at BlueSky Studios in Jackson, Mississippi with producer Casey Combest. The EP is a diverse collection of originals written by Mooney, ranging from blues to rock to pop. After 4 months in the studio, Mooney released Somewhere in Between internationally on July 15th, 2014. Within 12 hours of the release, Mooney’s EP was charting in the Top 10 of the iTunes Singer/Songwriter chart, along with being the top-selling EP on the Singer-Songwriter chart for back-to-back days.

The album spawned three successful singles: Heartbreaker, Somewhere in Between, and The Love You Never Knew; all of which received significant airplay on terrestrial and college radio stations in the south. Mooney spent the rest of the summer of 2014 on the road promoting Somewhere in Between through a tour of radio interviews, concerts, and TV appearances.

Mooney spent the summer of 2015 on the road with a twenty-five date tour in the southeast. The tour hit many of the region’s premiere venues and festivals. The tour was highlighted by several over-capacity headlining shows at Hard Rock Memphis, Brookstock Music Festival, and the famous Hal & Mal’s in Jackson, MS among other venues.

Aside from his solo career, Mooney has become an in-demand session and touring musician, serving as a background vocalist and pianist for many popular southern acts. Mooney also hosts the Mississippi Music Hour on Rebel Radio in Oxford, MS.

As of Spring 2016, Mooney is currently preparing to release his second EP followed by the biggest tour of his career thus far!
